Owens Valley

Back in the desert for a short camping trip, we stopped off at Fossil Falls at the south end of Owens Valley. This was where an ancient river, back when the Mojave was much wetter than it is today, crossed an even more ancient lava flow. The water created a waterfall and carved down into the volcanic rock leaving strange twisted passages behind.

For the night we went up into the hills above Lone Pine. This area is remote enough that the starts shine brilliantly at night.

Finally we looped back through Death Valley with a hike out to Darwin Falls, one of the few reliably wet spots in the area.
